Mei is 13 years old, which means she is profoundly uncool. This is not a sneering judgment, but a simple fact — one that “Turning Red” enthusiastically embraces.
And its protagonist, 13-year-old Meilin Lee (voiced by Rosalie Chiang), is a Chinese-Canadian eighth-grader in the throes of puberty. For Pixar, a factory of childhood whimsy designed to make adults cry, “Turning Red” fills in more than a few blind spots.
Set in Toronto, Ontario in 2002, it follows Meilin “Mei” Lee, a 13-year-old Chinese-Canadian student who, due to a hereditary curse, transforms into a giant red panda when she experiences any strong emotion.
